Paul D’Abruzzo proudly served as a Toronto firefighter for a decade. Firefighting offered a tight-knit brotherhood, a six-figure salary and excellent benefits. But Paul and his wife Laura dreamed of more: a life of freedom and a legacy for their family.
During the financial crisis of 2009, Paul started investing in real estate part-time. He hired a mentor and studied business. He knew real estate held enormous potential.
But as the years passed, he didn’t have the time or energy to make the most of it. Paul felt as the job he loved trapped him in "Golden Handcuffs”.
The trauma of firefighting took its toll. His health and family life suffered. He and Laura decided it was now or never.
They dug in, working with their mentor to formulate an exit plan from firefighting and a way to replace Paul’s six-figure salary by investing passively in real-estate.
the Lifestyle of their dreams
In 2020, Paul left firefighting to go into real estate full-time. Like the rest of the world, he had no idea of the challenges to come. By 2020, Paul had built a strong portfolio and business in Real Estate. To sustain his growing family and desired lifestyle, Paul committed to substantial growth.
In a short time, his business and Portfolio more than doubled and demand for his services grew so large, Paul grew a solid team around him. He built a reputation as an astute asset manager, an investor-focused realtor and a coach with integrity.
With Paul focusing on real estate full-time, they grew to manage $45 million in assets, a mix of MULTI-FAMILY, STUDENT and SHORT-TERM RENTALS. Plus LAND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS all in the Greater Toronto Area and Golden Horseshoe in Ontario.
Their family loves to travel, so Paul and Laura set up their real estate business so it could be managed remotely. When not traveling, Paul worked at home, freeing up time to spend with Laura and their three girls. Paul and Laura were living the lifestyle they imagined.
Pivoting during the lows of 2022 and 2023
When mortgage payments doubled in 2022, Paul was forced to pivot. To stabilize his business, he was forced to question every assumption he’d ever made about real estate.
With the help of his advisor, he put on his Asset Management Hat and took action. He began to understand that compared to the past two decades, real estate investing today is a very different game, with very different rules.
Yet it’s a game that can be predicted, strategically mastered – and won.
